Police blast rioters with water cannon as violence flares in Northern Ireland
Police have deployed water cannon on rioters in west Belfast as violence broke out for a seventh night in Northern Ireland.
Stones and fireworks were thrown at officers by gangs of youths gathered on the nationalist Springfield Road, close to where disorder had taken place in recent evenings.
The latest disorder came as US president Joe Biden has called for a calming of tensions, with the White House saying it was “concerned” by developments.
“We are concerned by the violence in Northern Ireland, and we join the British, Irish, and Northern Irish leaders in their calls for calm,” White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki told a press conference on Thursday.
Prime minister Boris Johnson and Ireland’s taoiseach Micheal Martin have also called for a lowering of tensions following the most violent week Belfast has seen in years.
The PSNI, which has been accused by loyalists of preferential treatment towards the nationalist community, used a water cannon for the first time in six years on Thursday night as rioters gathered on the Springfield Road, Belfast…..
