As hotly anticipated, the latest iPhone 13 and 13 mini models come with a new and improved camera and ‘cinematic mode’, allowing the phone to change focus mid-filming. The main difference to the design is also in the camera department, as the classic vertical lens setup has switched to a diagonal one.

But it wouldn’t be a proper iPhone launch without the Pro and Pro Max versions. Say a tearful apology to your bank accounts because it’s going to be hard to say no to a faster and more responsive screen and operating system. The new phones combine their A15 chip with a five core GPU, while the triple camera has been updated for improved magnification and wide angle shots. It also allows for real-time editing.

The latest iPhone 13 phones will be available to pre-order from Friday 17 September. Networks such as Vodafone are offering huge savings when you trade in an iPhone 11.

iPhone 12 and 12 Pro

Apple’s last major iPhone release, the iPhone 12 range marked a modest improvement on the previous year’s iPhone launch. The newbies were the first to support 5G networks and also offered better cameras. In addition to a more compact design, the 12 range was the first to have the new OLED screens, offering everything in a sharper and brighter condition than iPhone ranges before. The 12 features a dual lens, while the 12 Pro boasts three rear-facing cameras. Check out our thoughts on the iPhone 12 here.

iPhone SE

In recent years, Apple has launched a cheaper alternative alongside its big reveal – for buyers who want the iPhone experience without the iPhone price tag (typically upwards of £1,000). The iPhone SE still has a powerful A13 Bionic chip inside (mimicking the iPhone 11 Pro) but, instead of Apple’s OLED screen, it comes with a 4.7″ retina HD display that takes a significant chunk out of the cost. It also comes in three colours, which have proved very popular; black, white and red. You can read our take on the iPhone SE here.

The S-pen is what revolutionises this new device from Samsung, likening it to a tablet, rather than simply a mobile handset. Looking for another reason to get hooked? Google Pixel 5

As far as a smartphone camera goes, Google Pixel comes up trumps – and the 5 is the most advanced yet in the technology company’s repertoire. Making a comeback after the slight disappointment of the Pixel 4, the 5 has a a 6.0-inch OLED screen and a 12.2MP dual camera, with auto-focus with dual-pixel phase detection – making this phone camera take some of the best photos a smartphone can. The portrait mode is what really sets this phone apart, making any photo – whether there’s a face in it or not – look of professional quality. Google finally listened to its consumers, too, and introduced the wide-angle lens feature in this latest smartphone release.

However, Apple is not the only company to release a new phone in Autumn 2021 and we anticipate the release of Google’s Pixel 6, 6 Pro and 5A devices in the coming months.

Also featuring OLED screens, the Pixel 4a and 4a 5G come with 24-bit depth for 16 million colours – but miss the smooth display feature that upgrades the Pixel 5. How to pick a good mobile phone deal

Trying to find the very best smartphone contract can be overwhelming. Many providers only offer deals for a limited time and there can be huge price disparities between different networks.

Right now, some of the best value deals you can find are on Three, although O2 and Vodafone both have deals on larger data packages. Some of the best sim-only deals can be found with iD, Plusnet, Three and Virgin.

To work out just how much a contract will cost in total, consider both the upfront fee and monthly costs to see if it makes sense for you both long and short-term. Always add both prices together when comparing rates.

Finally, you should always make a choice around how much data you plan to use. This is one of the areas where people easily exceed their budget. Many providers offer great deals on unlimited data packages or add-ons for the app addicts among us but those who typically connect to Wi-Fi to browse may not need to spend anywhere near as much.

Where can I find the best mobile phone contracts?

While you might prefer to buy a phone through one of the major providers, many of the best deals are actually available through third party retailers. Websites such as Mobiles.co.uk, which is part of Dixons Carphone, and retailers such as Carphone Warehouse are safe to use and offer exclusive prices that you won’t find on major networks.

Several of the main carriers don’t market all handsets on their websites. In these cases, discount retailers are the best place to find them.

For a more flexible option, GiffGaff allows you to pay for your phone by buying packages of data and minutes each month. It lets customers switch or downgrade their data plan more easily than with other providers.

What should you look for in a mobile phone contract?

  • Minutes: Most mobile phone deals come with unlimited calls and texts, but make sure you check as some cheaper deals have limited minutes.
  • Data: If your only data usage is rarely checking emails, you may need as little as 1GB of data. Most people will require 2GB or more, particularly if you are a regular user of Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram. Significantly more will be required for those who want to stream videos or music.
  • Roaming charges: Following changes to roaming charges, you are now billed the same fee in any EU country as you would in the UK. Some providers offer global roaming packages, which provide better international rates across continents.
  • Benefits: Mobile networks often include added perks in their packages, such as discount cinema tickets and priority bookings for music events. O2 Priority offers tickets, entertainment and food discounts, EE offers six months of Apple Music, and some Vodafone deals come with  discounted access to apps such as Spotify.
  • Cashback deals: Some third party providers use cashback offers to cut monthly phone bills. This requires the buyer to claim back some of their money in several installments across the life of the contract to secure a lower price.

This month’s best SIM-only deals:

Instead of picking up a smartphone contract on its own, you could consider buying the handset outright and turning to a cheap sim card deal instead. These can provide you with more minutes and data while adding the flexibility of choice over an existing or preferred handset.

Right now there are some big offers on SIM-only deals for customers happy to buy their phone outright:

Tesco: 2GB of data with unlimited minutes and texts from £7.50 per month.

iD: 4GB of data with unlimited minutes and texts from £6 per month.

Plusnet: 12GB of data with unlimited minutes and texts from £8 per month.

Virgin: 12GB with unlimited minutes and texts from £10 per month.

Three: Unlimited data, minutes and texts from £10 per month.

Vodafone: Unlimited data, calls and texts, from £11 per month.

GiffGaff: 10GB of data with unlimited calls and texts, from £10 per month.
